Description:
The UMW Foundation, the institutionally related foundation of the University of Mary Washington, an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is seeking a part-time Accounting Intern. The candidate will have a high attention to detail and good organizational skills. The internship is where an Accounting or Business major will learn practical skills to process contributions and accounts payable under the guidance of the Senior Accountant and Controller. Completion of Principles of Accounting is required. Increased responsibility available if an intern returns for a subsequent semester(s).
Students hired for the internship would be eligible to apply for the V-TOP Internship Support Grant regardless of whether they seek credit for the experience. Prior to applying for the grant, student interns would need to have a fully approved academic credit or zero-credit internship contract on file in Handshake with the University of Mary Washington.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Properly classify and record contributions received from donors. Obtain approvals, and scan and file contribution reports. Subsequent duties include recording, non-contribution receipts.
- Review disbursement requests for proper documentation, classification, and sufficient funding. Properly classify and record disbursements. Obtain approvals and distribute payments. Scan and file all disbursements. Subsequent duties include vendor maintenance.
- Assists us in document processing and retention to ensure all accounting documents were organized and filled out for audit and inquiry retrieval.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work ethically
