Handshake: Job #9865263

Position Overview: This role reports to the Electrical/Test engineer who is regularly in the office.  The Mechanical Designer will mentor and support the above activities

Daily engineering requirements of this role:

  • Collaborate with electrical/test engineer to boil down operational requirements of the product’s features into physical principles of operation.  Limit the test where appropriate to the scope of parameters that can fail due to manufacturing defects.  Come up with out-of-the-box simple solutions to reliably test these features.  For example mount a spinning image in the view of an optical encoder.
  • Design easy-to-maintain mounts and adapter plates for affixing the Unit Under Test (UUT) and various elements of test equipment in the fixture.
  • Design in space and restraints for proper routing and strain relief of cables.
  • Design in airflow as needed for heat-generating parts. No precision modeling here – just overkill cooling when required.

Daily hands-on requirements of this role:

  • 3D modeling (CAD)
  • 3D Printing parts, design for printability, printer troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Selecting and specifying mechanical parts such as hinges, enclosures, and fasteners for purchase.
  • Fabricating custom parts on Bridgeport mill
  • Turning custom parts on manual lathe.

While performing this role, you will develop the following skills:

  • Manufacturing test mindset – learning to identify and test for defects that can occur during the manufacturing process.
  • Out-of-the box problem solving.  Development of solutions with off-label usage of parts.
  • Estimating/quoting
  • Time/project management
  • Industrial design – optimizing a solution for the operator who uses the fixture and the technician who maintains/repairs it.

Internship Requirement/Qualifications:
