The Urban League of Hampton Roads (ULHR), in partnership with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), is seeking passionate and driven college students enrolled at a local university to join our Education and Youth Development Department as paid interns. This internship is ideal for students pursuing careers in education, school counselling, youth development, or related fields and interested in gaining hands-on experience working with students and educational professionals.
This internship also serves as a pre-employment pipeline for candidates interested in transitioning into full-time roles within the Urban League or educational sectors upon graduation.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional Support & Curriculum Design
- Facilitate small group academic and enrichment sessions for PreK–12 students.
- Create lesson plans and contribute to the development of a year-long curriculum.
- Provide tutoring and mentorship aligned with program goals and Virginia learning standards.
Professional Engagement
- Participate in school staff meetings, contributing to the development of student support strategies.
- Attend Urban League department and all-staff meetings to gain insight into nonprofit operations and educational program management.
- Be actively involved in professional development workshops hosted by ULHR and SCHEV.
Mentorship & Training
- Work under the guidance of a dedicated mentor within the school district.
- Participate in leadership coaching and educational seminars on best practices.
Conference Participation
- Attend ULHR’s annual Mentor Conference in Washington, D.C. alongside professional staff and program participants.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be currently enrolled at a local college or university (undergraduate or graduate level).
- Majoring in Education, Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or related fields.
- A strong interest in pursuing a career in education, youth services, or nonprofit leadership.
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and able to commit to the full academic year internship.
- Must demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to equity and empowerment.
Preferred Skills & Attributes:
- Experience working with youth in educational or extracurricular settings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Creativity, initiative, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse student backgrounds and experiences.
- Basic proficiency in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office.
