This intern will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of research and business development activities in LSB and VCU facilities as part of a small, but growing, multi-institutional collaboration led by LSB officers. Effort will be split approximately equally between research and business activities, including:

Research Activities:

  • Assist with maintaining the lab and ensuring compliance with all relevant policies.
  • Assist with mouse treatments (involving a near-infrared laser), monitoring, tissue collection, and related benchwork. This may include histological staining, ICP-MS, tissue culture, assays of cell viability and biomarkers, among other techniques.
  • Assist with organizing and analysing experimental results for presentation to others as needed.

Business Activities:

  • Assist with customer discovery, analyses of market indications and competition, refining strategies for R&D and reimbursement, identifying funding opportunities and potential collaborators, networking with stakeholders, and other tasks as needed.
  • Assist with developing written and visual materials to communicate technical information at varying levels of resolution that meet the needs of diverse audiences and reinforce a brand identity. These materials may support FDA communications, grant proposals, fundraising from industry specialists and non-specialists, website design, quarterly newsletters, and other goals.

Internship Requirement/Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • BS degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering and 1 year of relevant work experience in a biomedical lab; or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental techniques with animals (e.g. mice).
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including organization and strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience or commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Graduate degree; or BS degree or equivalent with 3 years relevant experience.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of medical practice, therapeutic approaches and molecular biology techniques; especially those related to drug-delivery, toxicology or oncology.
  • Entrepreneurial experience; especially within the biotech industry.
  • Candidates with the skills and/or interest to expand beyond this role as LSB grows are highly desired; this role potentially serves as a stepping-stone to a full-time leadership position.

Light Switch Bio LLC (LSB) is a spinout company from the lab of Matthew Hartman PhD at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, a nationally ranked cancer center located in the heart of Downtown Richmond. With a vision to help patients avoid the physical and financial side effects of cancer therapy, LSB is developing a first-in-class photoactivated chemotherapy based on cisplatin.
