Description: Performs professional work preparing and providing training and instruction to students with autism, developmental disability, learning disability, emotionally disturbed and other health impairment, individually and in groups; motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Head of School. Supervision is exercised over paraprofessionals.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and training special needs students; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Facilitate specialized subject matter(s), motivating all students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Assesses and evaluates the needs of students.
  • Develop individualized instructional programs.
  • Instruct students in the area(s) of specialization and subject matter specified in State law and administrative regulations by VDOE.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behaviour.
  • Encourages students to think independently, develop and express original ideas.
  • Evaluate students’ progress, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Communicates with students, parents, and stakeholders through conferences and other means.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional books and instructional materials.
  • Supervises and monitors student movement and escorts students throughout the building.
  • Participates in staff committee meetings, parent/student meetings required.
  • Performs administrative functions in computer-based applications.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Internship Requirement/Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Working toward a baccalaureate degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university from an approved program in special education.
  • Must have a desire to possess a valid Virginia Postgraduate, Collegiate, or Provisional license in any disability category

Causeway Academy is a private day school located at 430 Jamestown Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23704. Established to serve students from kindergarten through fourth grade, the academy specializes in supporting children diagnosed with developmental disabilities, emotional disturbances, specific learning disabilities, autism, and other health impairments.

iQuasar LLC, as the staffing agency for the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) internship program, will handle the scheduling of interviews and onboarding processes. As part of this process, interns will be placed on iQuasar LLC’s payroll.
